Happy Monday, everyone!  This morning, I have three little words for you:

Pinterest is disgustingly addictive.

Okay, technically that’s four words, but it’s still true. I’ve spent the last few weeks learning about Pinterest, and developing some pin boards of my own, after our darling Belle Friday was gracious enough to create BelleView Pinterest boards, thereby sucking me in and creating an addiction that sometimes scares me.  I’m convinced that the creators of Pinterest may have discovered the science behind time travel.  Every time I get on there, it’s suddenly an hour later…

There’s just something so tempting about seeing what everybody else is making, and decorating, and especially what everyone else is cooking.

You can find my Pinterest boards here: (if you’d like see how crazy I’ve gone)  http://pinterest.com/lisawingatebook/.  Or you can find the BelleView Pinterest boards here:  http://pinterest.com/bellesofsbv/

So, this week on BelleView, we’re talking about recipes we want to make for the holidays.  Well… of course… you know where my mind went first.  YES!  Straight to Pinterest.  One thing the Wingates like to do during the holidays is cook and eat.  We also have a long-standing tradition of delivering goodies to the neighbors.  This year, I’ve already earmarked some ideas on Pinterest that I want to try.  Here’s a whole page of adorable “gifty” foods that can be made in mason jars.  And we all know that anything in a mason jar is double-cute:  http://pinterest.com/christi1011/food-in-jars/

A couple weeks ago, our sweet BelleView porch-sitting friend, Virginia Rush, sent me a recipe for cute little individual pies in a jar from another Texas blogger, TheNerdsWife.  How sweet would these be to take to the neighbors on Christmas Eve?

You can find her full post and the recipe here:  http://thenerdswife.com/2010/11/pie-in-jar.html

So, I plan to make these for the holidays, but I’ll be using a favorite family recipe for one of those good ol’ farm pies that doesn’t get much attention anymore.  Back in the day, buttermilk pies were popular because they didn’t require any fancy ingredients.  They were made from stuff farm wives had around–butter, eggs, sugar, flour, buttermilk.  Simple stuff.  I’ve baked this pie in custard cups before, so I’m sure it will work in the mason jars.

Old Time Buttermilk Pie

9 inch unbaked pie shell
½ cup butter
2 cups sugar
3 rounded Tbsp, flour
3 eggs, beaten
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla
dash nutmeg (optional)

Soften butter, add sugar, cream together well. Add flour and eggs, beat well. Stir in buttermilk, vanilla, and nutmeg. Pour into unbaked pie shell. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes. Cool completely before serving.  (The recipes I read say that the cooking time is about the same in the jars.  It’s pretty easy to tell with Buttermilk Pie.  When it stops jiggling in the center, it’s done.)

** For a yummy variation, try adding a handful of flaked coconut, a handful of white chocolate chips, and a handful of chopped pecans to the pie shell.**

I can’t wait to try it.  Want to stop by the porch for some?

And lastly, while we’re on the subject of The Porch, I have some good news and some sad news to share.  The sad news is that our darlin’ Belle Wednesday, Marybeth Whalen, will be stepping off the porch.  She’s a busy girl, between books and growing kids, and we’ll miss sharing bits of her crazy life around here.  She’ll be back from time to time to visit, though, to tell us what she’s up to.

The good news is that Wednesdays will be in good hands with a brand new Belle.  Stay tuned next week for more news on that, and the unveiling of the newest Belle!

That all sounds pretty dramatic, doesn’t it?
