My Thoughts on Katrina

My heart is grieved over the devastation in New Orleans. It breaks for the people who are trapped and starving, for those who have died. But I’m more grieved that this natural disaster is being used for political posturing and accusation. That political hacks are suggesting racism and prejudice. Have we really become a a nation that demands the government meet all our needs and if they don’t, we stamp our feet like spoiled children? Are we not descendants of great exploreres and pioneers who built this great nation out of suffering, pain, disappointment and the sweat of their brow? Where is the good old American ingenuity and overcoming spirit? Where is the moxie that draws us together in times of trial so that we aid one another? The people of New Orleans are fighting amongst themselves, stealing, and killing each other. They are lost, confused, unable to help themselves in anyway. They were unprepared and they blame the federal government and President Bush, everyone but themselves. It’s unbelievable. My heart is sadden to see the state of our nation. To see how the news is being reported. Matt Lauer was visible angry this morning when he interview Tim Russert about his opinion on federal aid. Why? Because deep down, Matt Lauer, and men and women like him, know that only God can save them and it enrages their spirit. They rage against what they cannot control. What I see is the truth about a great city is being exposed. In fact, the truth about a great nation is being exposed. New Orleans harbors evil and debauchery. And we, as a nation, defend it and justify it. Did you know this week was supposed to be the 34th Annual Souther Decadence Festival? Here’s a description: Parades and non-stop parties aside, Southern Decadence may be most famous (or infamous) for the displays of naked flesh which characterize the event We should all be on our faces, humbling ourselves before the living God, the Great Judge, begging for mercy and repenting of our sins. Why? Because He is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness! It’s the whole purpose of the Cross! Do not be deceived, God is not mocked. Whatsoever a man sows, he reaps. Galatians 6:7. You cannot sow to evil and reap good. It’s impossible. But we’ve become so politically correct no one can say, “Hey, that’s wrong.” Please, I do not want to trivialize the suffering among the people of New Orleans. I know it is agonizing and terrifying, but it is no excuse to behave like barbarians, no reason to point the finger of accusation. Pray for New Orleans. Pray for our nation. Pray for the media. Pray for God to have mercy in the midst of judgment.
