This week’s table talker question is based on my books. Which means my answer is probably a given– Sunset Beach, NC where my books are set!
When the experts say “write what you know” I’m a prime example. I didn’t have to look very far to find a perfect setting for my novels, The Mailbox and The Guest Book (and the upcoming The Wishing Tree). Sunset Beach NC has held a special place in my heart since I first visited there when I was 15. I tagged along with a friend and her family and made a secret promise to myself during that idyllic week we spent there: When I have my own family someday, I’m bringing them here.
It’s not always easy to keep those promises we make to our childhood selves. But this one happened. I did have my own family and as soon as we were able we started vacationing at Sunset. My kids have banked many memories on that shore, crossed the old bridge and the new one as we have come and gone, walked the pier and wandered the shops. I am more than a little proud that they have fostered a love for it that rivals mine. I hope to keep visiting (and writing about) Sunset Beach NC for a long time to come.
