Thanksgiving. First celebrated by Pilgrims in 1621, it was a tradition they brought with them from England. Protestants wanted to celebrate God’s providence with thanksgiving. And they wanted to commemorate seasons of judgment – drought, flooding, pestilence – with fasting.
